Il y a des moments heureux où la vie nous apporte le soleil et le bonheur avec le sourire des amis qui viennent de loin nous rappeller a quel point c'est important de pouvoir rire ensemble, parler des choses de la vie et juste profiter du moment. La semaine denière j'ai eu ce cadeau ! Pendant une semaine chargé et des cours avec des élèves talentueuses, j'ai eu la visite de Linda Kaye-Moses et son époux photographe Evan Soldinger. Quiconque les connait sait à quel point ils sont généreux, adorables et vrai!
There are happy times when life brings us the sunny pleasure of a friendly smile to remind us of the importance of shared laughter, of "talking story" and just enjoying the moment. Last week I was given this great gift ! During a very heavy week filled also with class and talented students, I had the pleasure of having a wonderful visit from Linda Kaye-Moses with spouse and photographer Evan Soldinger. Anyone who knows them also knows how generous, adorable and real they both are !

En vacances en France, ils ont fait plusieurs heures de route jusqu'en Bretagne mardi dernier pour que nous puissions passer un peu de temps ensemble. J'avoue que je ne voulais pas qu'ils partent, essayant même de les kidnapper sans succès, quel dommage !! Diner au bord de la mer, puis petit-dejeuner sur le port, visite de la côte et ensuite une bonne balade à Pont-Aven, suivant les tracves de Gauguin !
On their Vacation to France they kindly drove a number of hours all the way to Bretagne last Tuesday so we could enjoy some time together. I admit I didn't want them to leave and even tried kidnapping them, but it didn't work, bummer ! Dinner by the ocean, breakfast on the port then a drive to show them the coast and off to lunch and an afternoon visit of Pont-Aven, following Gauguin's footsteps !

Et, la cerise sur cet imense gateaux c'est d'avoir reçu son excellent livre dedicacé, en personne et en avant première! Il est maintenant disponible chez Whole Lotta Whimsy sous "books" ou ici. Le soir même, après notre diîner, allant me coucher livre en main je l'ai lu, regardé, re-regardé. Les projets sont originaux avec sa touche si unique, des techniques et des astuces très intéressantes et une galerie de photos d'artistes dont j'ai le plaisir de dire que j'en fait partie.

And the cherry on this delicious cake was having received her absolutely excellent and dedicated book before its official release! It is available through Whole Lotta Whimsy under "books" or here. After dinner that same evening while going to bed book in hand, I couldn't put it down, and turned the pages over and over. The projects are original, and have her wonderful touch, the techniques and special construction tips are very interesting and the photo gallery, of which I feel super lucky to be a part, is really filled with wonderful work by talented artists in the field.

Linda m'a offert en plus le super CD "Another Spin" de son fils compositeur, guitariste et chanteur, Adam Michael Rothberg, que je vous invite à découvrir sur YouTube. Comme quoi le talent est souvent bel et bien une histoire de gênes ! Ce n'est pas étonnant, ils sont en plus tous des musiciens accomplis dans la famille.

Par fois nous oublions les choses les plus élémentaires ... et elles nous rappellent à l'ordre aussi vite ... comme le coin du tas en acier sur mon orteille pendant le premier jour du stage de cette semaine me rappellant pourquoi on doit mettre toujours des chaussures fermés à l'atelier (et des vetements en coton et un tablier) ! Pas très amusant, juste drolement bête, mais au moins rien de cassé. Je n'ai toujours pas ouvert non plus pour voir :o) Lora, je promets que je ne fais pas exprès ;o)

Sometimes we forget the most obvious and essential things ... and they have an uncomfortable way of reminding us ...like the steel block's point falling on my toe during the first day of this week's workshop reminding me one should always wear closed shoes in a workshop (together with cotton clothes and an apron, BTW) ! Not fun just very stupidly silly, but nothing broke. I still haven't opened up to see what it looks like :o) Lora, I swear I'm not trying ;o)

Voilà que je suis bloquée ... je n'en vois pas ! Je réfléchit pendany que j'écris. Certains ont une claire influence du passé, d'une époque comme Art Deco, ou un style comme le Celtic, par exemple. Et bien, moi, je ne le vois pas dans mon travail. C'est peut-être par ce que ce n'est pas quelque chose que je cherche de manière consciente. Ou peut-être parce que je suis trop occupée à conduire le vélo, tête au guidon, et que je vois juste la route à faire devant moi et non pas les marques de pneus laissés en chemin. Je ne sais pas.
I'm totally blocked ... I just don't see an answer to this one! I'm thinking while writing this. Some artists have a clear influence from the past, a period like Art Deco, or a style often referred to as Celtic, for example. I personally don't see any of this in my own work. Maybe it's because it's not something I consciously search for. Or maybe it's because I'm simply too busy riding the bike, head on the steering wheel, and I only see the road still to be covered in front of me and not the tire marks left behind me on the way. I don't know.
Certains disent que mes bijoux ont un style "éthnies du monde" avec des lignes modernes. Je ne sais pas. Peut-être. Comme vous voyez par les photos ci-dessus, je cherche à trouver une
réponse à la question d'aujourd'hui, mais seulement "après coup", ça n'a pas
été réfléchit avant ni au moment de faire le bijou.
Je l'ai déjà dit avant, mais ayant grandit à Hawaii, j'adore ce que est tribal, fait avec les moyens de bord, les objets de la nature servant des symboles. Tout ce que je peux dire c'est que ce n'est pas réfléchit, c'est comme ça que ça veut sortir, je ne suis que l'outil.
Some people say that my jewelry has a "world ethnic" feel to it, mixed with modern lines. I don't know. Maybe. As you can see in the pictures below, I'm trying to find the answer to today's question, but only as an afterthought because non of this is planned when I design or make a piece. I know I've said this bfore, but having grown up in Hawaii I love things tribal, made with the materials and object at hand, often from nature and with a symbolic purpose. All I can say is non of it is planned, it's just the way it wants to come out, I'm just a tool.

Venant plutôt d'une famille d'architects (mon père, mon frère et ma soeur, et le père de mon mari - oui, ... ah, "Ça Serait le Bonheur" !! ), j'avoue que j'aime l'architecture du 20e siècle, j'aime à la fois ce ce qui est géométrique et ce qui est ergonomique, des deux Franks: de Frank Lloyd-Wright à Frank Gehry. Alors, je crois qu'elle est plutôt là mon influence, s'il y en a une,

Coming from a family of architects (my father, my brother, my sister and my father-in-law ... I know ... If I had a Hammer ...). I admit I love 20th century architecture, both géometric forms and more ergonomic ones by the two Franks: Frank Lloyd-Wright t Frank Gehry. So I guess I could say that is really where my influence, if any, comes from - modern architecture mixed with my childhood ... shake, shake, shake and ... pop! There you have it !

Ce sont des ouvres qui font battre mon coeur plus fort chaque fois que je les vois. WAOUW ! Etant plutôt dans le petit, dans le détail, quand je vois des ouvres avec autant de fluidité et détail de cette grandeur, cela me semble incroyable ! C'est énorme de réussir de tels prouesses avec du beton, de l'acier et du verre ... et on peut même circuler à l'intérieur, vous imaginez ?!!!
These materpieces make my heart throb stronger every time I view them. WOW ! Being a person who works in small scale, with small details, it amazes me to see magnitude and fluidity of these structures. It seems gigantic to achieve such prowess with concrete, iron, and glass ... and you can even circulate inside it, can you imagine ?!!!

Cela dit, bien que mon admiration soit enorme, je n'ai jamais aspirée a être architecte, justement par la taille qui me dépasse, les calcules mathématiques ;o), le besoin de personnes extérieurs en grand chantier, et probablement pour le nombre déjà bien présent pratiquants dans mon entourage ;o) J'aime la proximité que j'ai avec toutes les étapes de fabrication. J'aime le 3D mais en petit, proche de l'être, pouvant lui parler tout les jours, mais aussi le sculptural à taille humaine, dans un jardin, par exemple, où le contact se fait au quotidien.
L'intimité du bijou propose un rapport exceptionnel qui me touche.
Ça doit aussi toucher Gehry, car il crée aussi des bijoux pour Tiffany's:
That said, even if I admire these tremendously, I myself never desired to be an architect probably because the size overwhelms me, because there's math involved ;o), because of the need for an outside team to make it come to life and quite probably because there were already enough of them around me ! :o) I love the proximity that I have will all the different stages of making a piece. I love working in 3D, making something close to the individual, much like a private daily conversation, but I also enjoy human size sculpture like in a garden where there can be some daily contact.
The intimacy and exceptional relationship we makers have through jewelry making is something which touches me.
This might also be Gehry's case, since he also designs jewelry for Tiffany's.
... Et de penser que cette fois-ci je croyais vraiment que je n'avais rien à dire ! ;o)

New Journal: PROFUSION !

Ça y est ! ProFusion est né ! Le Journal Officiel des Pâtes à Métaux (argent, or, bronze, cuivre) est enfin lancé ! Ça se fête !
Cela faisait des mois que ce projet se construisait de petit à petit, quelques détails peuvent encore êtres changés en fonction de son évolution, d'autres choses viendrons s'y rajouter.
Maintenant, en plus du site de la Guilde Francophone, et de son Forum super actif, vous avez une nouvelle source d'informations : ProFusion. Pourquoi ProFusion ? Parce que, en toute cohérence avec la revue FUSION de la Guilde Internationale dont elle est une branche, la Guilde Francophone, crée en mai 2007, est pour la fusion et la profusion des idées, des techniques et des échanges ! La Guilde donne droit à diverses avantages à ses adhérents, et en France nous souhaitons en rajouter quelques unes à la liste. Ceci n'est qu'un début.
Visitez le journal, abonnez-vous, proposez vos idées et votre enthousiasme à l'équipe ! Elle sera à votre écoute et fera de son mieux pour vous proposer des informations intéressantes.

It's time to celebrate ! A new French journal is born ! ProFusion is the new Official French language Journal for Metal Clays (silver, gold, bronze, copper)!
This project has been planned for quite some time and has been being built little by little. There are still new things that will be added and some may be changed to adapt to it's readers and its evolution, but it's here ! Now, together with the French Guild's main website and its active Forum, both in existence since the Guilde Francophone's launch in May 2007, French readers have access to a new reliable source of information: ProFusion.
Why profusion ? Well, because in coherence with Fusion magazine of the International Guild of which France is a branch , the French Guild is for the fusion and profusion of ideas, techniques and exchange. The Guild offers it's members a number of advantages, and locally we wish to add further services to the list. This is just a beginning. I invite you to visit the journal and to return regularly. If you are in a French speaking country and work with metal clay please feel free to offer ideas and enthusiasm to the team ! They will be doing their best to listen and offer interesting information to readers.
And last, if you are a member of the French guild (international members are automatic members, however, all information will be exclusively in French for the time being) a special section is reserved specially for you - one more good reason to join !

Quand la Pâte d'Argent Devient un Jeux d'Enfant!
Ma fille de maintenant 9 ans m'a toujours regardé avec ses grands yeux et une grand désire de "faire comme maman". Elle est très créative et, comme tout enfant, adore réaliser des choses avec ses mains. Mes enfants connaissent la pâte d'argent par mon travail, et ont de l'expérience avec la pâte polymère par les diverses activités que je leur propose depuis plusieurs années. J'ai longtemps cherché pour trouver un projet qu'elle ait le plaisir de réaliser entièrement à partir de son imagination, tout en apprenant quelques petites choses d'importantes dans le chemin. Je voulais qu'elle apprenne les diverses étapes d'une création.

When Metal Clay becomes Child's Play!
My
little 9 year-old has always looked at my work with her big eyes and
an enormous desire to "do like mommy". She's very creative
and, like all kids, loves to make things with her hands. My kids know metalclay
through my work and have experience with polymer clay from the many
activities that I've suggested to them all these past years. I searched a
long time to find a project which she'd be able to make entirely from
her imagination, actively taking part in it ,while learning some important things in the process. I wanted her to learn the various stages of a design. Getting her imagination to work is really easy!
Alors, septembre dernier, quand elle avait 8 ans, j'ai enfin trouvé un projet à sa taille. Elle a fait un dessin, puis je lui ait demandé de réaliser d'abord une maquette en pâte polymère pour qu'elle ait la notion du volume et de la taille. La pâte polymère est idéal pour une maquette puisqu'elle ne
sèche pas pendant les étapes. Cela fait une chose en moins à gérer
quand on a 8 ans ! Je lui ai ensuite un peu aidée pour faire le moule, pour qu'elle apprenne à bien saisir les détails avec le silicone. Elle a fait son pendentif en pâte d'argent, séchée, puis je lui ai un peu aidée à poncer légèrement pour qu'elle voit comment éviter les aspérités et les pointes. Après cuisson j'ai juste soudé l'anneau à l'arrière (non, je ne lui ai pas laissé faire !), et elle l'a poli.

So,
last September, when she was 8, I finally found a project just about
"her size". She first made a drawing, then I asked her to make a model
using polymer clay in order to have a feel of size and volume. Polymer is great here because it doesn't dry out in the process so it's one less thing to deal with when you're 8 ! I then
helped her a bit to make the mold, and learn how to grasp details. She
then made her pendant in metal clay, dried, and I helped sand a bit so
she could learn how to avoid rough parts and points. After firing I
just soldered the back ring for the bail (no, I didn't let her do that!), and she polished it.
C'est vrai qu'il pourait avoir une petite pierre ou perle au niveau de sa queu pour l'équilibre visuel de l'objet, mais j'avoue que je suis très fière du résultat et, le principal c'est qu'elle aussi est très fière de son acomplissement ! Regardez par vous même. Pour moi c'est un beau petit phoenix, très symbolique, avec juste une petite touch primitive comme je les aime !

It could use a little pearl or stone to balance it out where the tail is, but I have to admit that I'm really proud of what she made ! And, the main thing is that she's very proud of herself and of her achievement ! Look for yourself. To me this is a beautiful and wonderfully symbolic little phoenix, just a touch primitive ! :o)

ce qui est des techniques traditionelles du metal, il y en tellement d'artistes que j'admire que je crois que j'aurais du mal a faire une liste. Quelques exemples sont Thomas Mann, Andy Copperman, ou Charles Lewton Brain, par exemple. Je rajouterais à cette liste tout les livres techniques de Tim
McCreight et la "bible de fabrication de bijoux" par Oppi Untracht. Je ne pense pas sur qu'ils aient "influencé" mon travail, mais ils m'ont plutôt touché m'incitant à chercher toujours ma propre voix, me montrant des chemins techniques avec leurs propre dextérité. Mes professeurs, proprement dit, ont étés en nombre très limité et surtout tout au début pour les bases, le reste a été mon propre chemin.

far as traditional metalsmithing techniques go, there are so many artists whose work I admire that the list would be too long. Some examples could be Thomas Mann, Andy Copperman, or Charles Lewton Brain. I would include in that list all of Tim
McCreight technical books and Oppi Untracht's "jewelry bible". I don't think any of these "influenced" my work directly, but rather touched me deeply, pushing me towards my own voice, showing me the road through their own technical dexterity. MY actual teachers were very limited in number and were there only for the very basics, the rest was learned through by following my own road.

Je ne l'ai jamais eu comme professeur, mais mes premiers essais seule en France (il n'y avait pas de professeurs en 2003) a été marque par le livre qu'elle a co-écrit avec Georgia Seargent. C'est un très bon livre essentiellement sur la pâte polymère, mais il contient un chapitre sur la pâte d'argent écrit par Celie, avec des elegants emporte-pièces en photo pour créer des boucles d'oreille, un des projets proposés. Alors, j'ai essayé de faire les miens, bien moins jolis mais très fonctionnels, puis
However,
as far as metal clay is concerned, I would say Celie Fago. I
have never taken a class directly from Celie, but she influenced my
very first experience with metal clay. This was 2003 and there were no
teachers here in France. So I ordered a book she co-wrote with Georgia
Seargant. It was actually essentially a polymer clay book, but
contained one chapter on metal clay written by Celie Fago, where she
showed her home-made cutters next to one of the projects. So I went and
made my own less elegant ones. The project was to make earrings and was
actually my very first project in metal clay and probably one of the
rare examples of my doing a project almost to the letter. I made my own cutter and my own stamps for the texture and I was hooked.

Puis, pour savoir si j'en étais capable de réussir à la mélanger avec la polymère, j'ai voulue essayer de créer 2 "bracelets Celie" avec des perles en "tubes" avec la pâte d'argent et pâte polymère gravée.Ils s'appellent ... les Celie Bracelets, bien sur ! Donc ... "Est-ce que je peux le faire ? OUI, je peux !" (Je remercie au passage Bob le Bricolleur, et oui, c'est lui qui l'a dit en premier avant président Obama, mes enfants qui sont proches des siens en age, peuvent l'attester ! ;o) ). Vous pouvez voir le resultat dans les 2 photos ci-dessous.
J'ai suivie mon propre chemin la minute ou ils sont sortis du four et que j'ai constaté qu'en effet, c'était de l'argent fin :o) C'est là ou j'a crée mes premières bagues en pâte d'argent (utilisant 2 des emportes pièces!). La suite vous la connaissez !
I then, just to see if I could successfully mix it with polymer, I decided to try to make 2 "Celie bracelets" with tube beads with metal clay and carved polymer clay. What are their names ? Celie bracelets, of course ! So ... "Can I do it ? YES ! I can !" (Thank you Bob the Builder, and yes, he said that before president Obama, my kids - who happen to be close in age to his, can attest to that ! ;o) ). You can see the results in the 2 photos below.
I followed my
own path the minute they came out of the kiln and I saw it was really
fine silver :o) Then I went and made my very first rings in metal clay
(using 2 of the cutters!). You probably know the rest of the story!

Linda Kaye-Moses Doming Plates !
Les outils pour faire des formes creuses crées par Linda Kaye-Moses sont maintenant aussi disponibles chez Whole Lotta Whimsy ! Des formes diverses dans une matière encore plus lisse et efficace avec des couleurs superbes pour chaque forme: rond, rond profond, oval et conique ! J'en parlais dans un poste précédent au moment où j'ai pu avoir la chance de tester un prototype l'an dernier, ici. Celles-ci sont des photos des objets réels, faites par le photograph Evan Soldinger.
Linda Kaye-Moses' wonderful "LKM Doming Plates" are now also available at Whole Lotta Whimsy! They come in very cool shapes (round, deep round, oval, cone) in a super smooth new material where each shape is color coded for easy recognition and eye candy features ;o). I spoke about them here when I was lucky enough to test one of the prototypes last year. Too cool ! These beauties are the actual photos of the plates, taken by photographer Evan Soldinger.
