J'ai enfin fini la bague qui me hântait depuis des semaines. Ellle a représentée un défis sur plusieurs aspects. Je suis heureuse qu'elle est enfin sortie de ma tête, qu'il a été un success, et qu'il est maintenant sur mon doigt pour des tests réussits jusqu'à présent. Les températures de cuisson pour le cuivre sont les mêmes que ceux utilisés pour les boucles d'oreilles dans mon post précédent ici - ça fonctionne chaque fois pour moi et je suis contente que cette question soit réglée.
A la fin de la dernière minute de la toute dernière dernière cuisson, mon four de 5 ans est monté à 926°C et je l'ai éteinte. Le lendemain ... pas de four. Alors j'ai appellé mes deux medecins de fours préférés, Tonya Davidson and Arnold Howard qui m'ont tout les deux suggérés qu'il s'agissait probablement d'un problème de thermocouple. YAY ! Suivant leurs recommandations, avec un tourne-visse et un thermmocouple (de chez Tonya) en main il est revenue à la vie et comme neuf ;o) Moralité de l'histoire: ayez toujours un thermocouple de rechange sous la main.

Copper clay and silver clay - new ring
I finally finished this ring which has been haunting my mind for weeks and weeks. It was a challenge in many aspects. I'm so happy that it's out of my head, that it was successful, and now on my finger for successful happily testing up to now. The firing schedule for the copper is the same as for my previous post on the earrings here - it has worked every time for me and I'm happy that's settled. At the end of the very last minute of it's last firing my 5 year old kiln went up to 926°C and turned it off. Next day ... no kiln. So I called my 2 favorite 2 kiln doctors, Tonya Davidson and Arnold Howard who both suggested it was a thermocouple problem ... YAY ! Followed the doctor's orders (and Arnold's great video) with a screw-driver and thermocouple (from Tonya) at hand and it's back to new ! Moral of the story: always have a spare thermocouple at hand ...

Pâte de Cuivre et patine - Copper clay and Patina

Je suis en train de faire encore des testes sur la pâte de cuivre et je dois dire que je suis très contente du résultat. Ces boucles d'oreilles font partie d'un lot de pâte de cuivre tout récemment sortie du four.
La cuisson a été effectué tout d'abord sur une étagère de four, comme pour la pâte d'argent, avec une monté lente de 250°C/heure, puis d'une heure pleine à 290°C. Ensuite les objets ont été mises dans du charbon actif normal (pas celu à base de coco car j'ai oublié de le changer !) et monté totale à 900°C pour une cuisson de 3H30. Ils sont sortis parfaits, sans micro-fissures, ni autres surprises.

I am in the process of making a number of test pieces with copper clay and I have to admit I'm super happy with the results. These earrings are part of a batch hat just came out of the kiln. The firing was first done on a kiln shelf with pieces supported on fiber blanket, much like I do with any silver clay piece.
I fired with a slow ramp of 250°C/hour (482°F/hr), holding one hour at 290°C (554°F). I then waited til they cooled (ok, barely, I took them out at 240°C, Im' not the patient type, and set them on a metal table while I put the pieces into the carbon regular carbon - I forgot to change to the new coconut one!). I did a full ramp to 900°C (1650°F) and held for 3 1/2 hours. Everything came out perfect, solid and strong! No micro-cracking, no surprises.
Ces boucles d'oreilles ont reçus une patine avec la Baldwin's Patina (sur google) avec un pinceau. Ce produit a été préconisé par Hadar Jacobson par qui j'ai pu le découvrir, l'acheter et surtout grâce à qui j'ai pu me la faire expédier. Cette patine n'a pas d'éffet sur l'argent ni sur l'or et est souvent utilisé pour patiner le Shakudo ou le Mokumé Gané utilisant du cuivre.
Hadar le conseille sur son blog pour rajouter du contrast entre la pâte de bronze et pâte de cuivre, ou entre le cuivre et l'argent. Mais je constate avec joie qu'ici, au lieu de rendre le cuivre simplement plus foncé comme dans le cas d'une melange de métaux, j'ai obtenue l'aspect vert-de-gris. Je trouves qu'il y a des pistes à suivre.
Et pensez à toutjours bien vous proteger les mains et le visage en travaillant avec les pâtes à métaux. Un produit que je viens de découvrir grace à Tonya Davidson est Gloves in a Bottle. Je n'utilise depuis peu et je vois une nette différence du point de vue de protection. Et non, dans le cas où vous vous demanderiez, je ne travail pour aucune de ces compagnies, je suis juste une heureuse utilisatrice qui crois dans le partage des bons adresses. :o)

I applied to Baldwin's Patina to these earrings using a brush. This prduct is recommended by Hadar Jacobson thanks to whom I discovered Baldwin's Patina, was able to order it and specially have it shipped to me here. This liquid doesn't affect silver or gold and is used on Shakudo and on Makumé Gané containing copper. Hadar advises on her blog to use it to achieve more contrast between bronze and copper clays, or between silver and copper clays. What I happily found here is that unlike the simple darkening of the copper when used with bronze, it actually gave my copper a "vert-de-gris" patina which I love, giving me more roads to pursue ...
Always protect your hands and face when using these base metal clays. A great product I've recently discovered thanks to Tonya Davison, and which I've been using, is Gloves in a Bottle, an it's made some major difference. And, no, in case you may wonder, I don't work for any of the companies mentioned, I'm just a happy user who believes in sharing good links. :o)

I "heart" Ganoksin ...
Cela fait des années que je consulte le site Ganoksin, je reçoit et lis régulièrement les informations de leur forum et je m'informe, comme plusieurs milliers de personnes dans le monde qui s'intéressent aux bijoux et à leur fabrication.
Ce site, pour les rares entre vous qui ne le connaissent pas, c'est une
des plus grandes centrales d'information sur le net rélatives au métier
de la bijouterie.
Les diverses rubriques extremment complètes,
et une source d'information des plus riches actuellement avec, entre
autres, la participation les professionnels les plus reconnus dans le
métier. Le forum International de Ganoksin, connu sous le nom de Orchid, avec ses archives, est énorme et très instructif avec plus de 8,500 membres dans le monde entier!
Et voilà que la semaine dernière, tout à fait par surprise, j'ai eu l'immense honneur d'avoir été invitée par Dr. Hanuman Aspler (l'homme derrière ce succès) à exposer mon travail et profil dans la galerie de Ganoksin Project. Like many of you jewelers out there in the world, I have been reading and consulting the Ganoksin website for a number of years. I regularly receive their wonderful forum updates and visit the website for invaluable information.
For the rare few among you who may not yet know of the Ganoksin Project, it is one of the largest websites in the field of quality jewelry making. Among many other things, it contains excellent articles from the field's most respected professionals. Their photo gallery is just amazing and well worth taking the time to visit the participating artists' pages. And last, the Orchid forum and its archives is one of the most detailed and complete forums on the block, with its over 8,500 members worldwide !
So imagine my surprise when last week I received the immense honor of being invited by Dr. Hanuman Aspler (the man behind the success) to put my work and profile on the Ganoksin Galleries ! Quand la Pâte d'Argent Devient un Jeux d'Enfant!
Ma fille de maintenant 9 ans m'a toujours regardé avec ses grands yeux et une grand désire de "faire comme maman". Elle est très créative et, comme tout enfant, adore réaliser des choses avec ses mains. Mes enfants connaissent la pâte d'argent par mon travail, et ont de l'expérience avec la pâte polymère par les diverses activités que je leur propose depuis plusieurs années. J'ai longtemps cherché pour trouver un projet qu'elle ait le plaisir de réaliser entièrement à partir de son imagination, tout en apprenant quelques petites choses d'importantes dans le chemin. Je voulais qu'elle apprenne les diverses étapes d'une création.

When Metal Clay becomes Child's Play!
My
little 9 year-old has always looked at my work with her big eyes and
an enormous desire to "do like mommy". She's very creative
and, like all kids, loves to make things with her hands. My kids know metalclay
through my work and have experience with polymer clay from the many
activities that I've suggested to them all these past years. I searched a
long time to find a project which she'd be able to make entirely from
her imagination, actively taking part in it ,while learning some important things in the process. I wanted her to learn the various stages of a design. Getting her imagination to work is really easy!
Alors, septembre dernier, quand elle avait 8 ans, j'ai enfin trouvé un projet à sa taille. Elle a fait un dessin, puis je lui ait demandé de réaliser d'abord une maquette en pâte polymère pour qu'elle ait la notion du volume et de la taille. La pâte polymère est idéal pour une maquette puisqu'elle ne
sèche pas pendant les étapes. Cela fait une chose en moins à gérer
quand on a 8 ans ! Je lui ai ensuite un peu aidée pour faire le moule, pour qu'elle apprenne à bien saisir les détails avec le silicone. Elle a fait son pendentif en pâte d'argent, séchée, puis je lui ai un peu aidée à poncer légèrement pour qu'elle voit comment éviter les aspérités et les pointes. Après cuisson j'ai juste soudé l'anneau à l'arrière (non, je ne lui ai pas laissé faire !), et elle l'a poli.

So,
last September, when she was 8, I finally found a project just about
"her size". She first made a drawing, then I asked her to make a model
using polymer clay in order to have a feel of size and volume. Polymer is great here because it doesn't dry out in the process so it's one less thing to deal with when you're 8 ! I then
helped her a bit to make the mold, and learn how to grasp details. She
then made her pendant in metal clay, dried, and I helped sand a bit so
she could learn how to avoid rough parts and points. After firing I
just soldered the back ring for the bail (no, I didn't let her do that!), and she polished it.
C'est vrai qu'il pourait avoir une petite pierre ou perle au niveau de sa queu pour l'équilibre visuel de l'objet, mais j'avoue que je suis très fière du résultat et, le principal c'est qu'elle aussi est très fière de son acomplissement ! Regardez par vous même. Pour moi c'est un beau petit phoenix, très symbolique, avec juste une petite touch primitive comme je les aime !

It could use a little pearl or stone to balance it out where the tail is, but I have to admit that I'm really proud of what she made ! And, the main thing is that she's very proud of herself and of her achievement ! Look for yourself. To me this is a beautiful and wonderfully symbolic little phoenix, just a touch primitive ! :o)

Pôle Bijou Baccarat - exposition "Quand le Bijou Innove"
Le Pôle Bijou Baccarat organise l'exposition "Quand le Bijou Innove" du 4 au 31 octobre 2008. Plusieurs techniques au tour du bijou seront exposées sur les 3
niveaux, comme la création 3D, le traitement de surfaces, prototypage,
etc.
Les prototypes crées pendant le Séminaire de Recherche Créative sur le métal à memoire de forme du mois de mai dernier seront exposés, ainsi que quelques pièces de travaux personnels des 5 artistes:

Pôle Bijou Baccarat Is organizing an exhibit titled "Quand le Bijou Innove" (When Jewelry Innovates") from the 4th to 31st of October. Various different techniques will be covered within the 3 floors of the show, such as 3D imaging and prototyping, innovative surface treatments, contemporary materials, etc. . Un Objet en Pâte d'Argent : Moulin à Prière - A Metal Clay Object : Tibetan Prayer Wheel
C'est un moulin à prière tibétain, ou "mani wheel", un peu plus petit que la paume de la main. J'ai créé la texture du "baril" et l'inscription du mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum" spécialement pour cet objet. Le "baril" est entièrement fait avec la pâte d'argent PMC, avec de l'or 24 K et 22 K "Aura 22" sur les lettres. Le mantra est inscrit sur une feuille de papier 27 fois puis insérée à l'intérieur où il tourne à l'infini avec le mouvement du "moulin à prière". Le manche est en Faux Bone et laiton, en hélix et en 2 parties pour symboliser la nécessité de l'union du monde spirituel et matériel pour notre équilibre et comme base solide sur laquelle peut tourner la roue à l'infini et renvoyer la prière, élevant notre énergie mais aussi l'envoyant à tout l'univers. o:-)

This Tibetan prayer wheel or "mani wheel" fits in the palm of the hand. The wheel itself is entirely of metal clay, with accents of 24 k gold and 22K Aura 22 liquid gold on the lettering. It contains the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum on the outside as well as on a piece of paper within it repeated 27 times. The handle is made of 2 pieces of Faux Bone, representing the intertwined union of the spiritual and the material world which together allow for a solid, balanced base for life in order for the prayer to turn and "do it's work" raising our energy and also sending it out to the world and ... "Behold! The jewel of the Lotus" :o). I used one length of brass wire to add to that "union" idea, to visually connect with the rest, and to emphasize on how the spiral also twists upwards like the spiral of life itself.

Outre que des Bijoux cette fois-ci / Other than Jewelry this Time
FR : J'ai été sollicité pour un événement où je devais créer des objets en dehors des bijoux. L'exercice m'a attiré, le défis aussi, car il fallait faire marcher ma tête un peu autrement. Voici le premier résultat d'une objet totalement hors bijoux. C'est une cuillère à thé, dont le manche est réalisé en Faux Bone. J'ai aussi utilisé du laiton de la résine, et de la PMC (pâte d'argent); J'aime les petites cuillères.
Ma grand-mère collectionnée des petites cuillères en argent, qu'on lui en offrait toujours avec son nom et la date gravés dessus. Je les ai hérités car elle aussi s'appelait Angela. Donc, il me semblait bien naturelle de faire la mienne en premier objet.
Je l'appelle "Born with an Urban-Ethnic Spoon in Her Mouth" de l'expression "née avec une cuillère d'argent dans la bouche", expression pour moi à la base en Anglais. Mais là, la cuillère me ressemble plus, avec ce coté ethnique et urbain à la fois, sans trop de "chichi" :o), d'où son nom. Ceci fait parti de ma série "Urban-Ethnic" ou "Ethnique-Urbain", qui comporte aussi des bijoux. Qu'en pensez-vous ?
US : I was asked to take part in an event in which I was to make objects other than jewelry. I enjoyed the idea and the challenge of having my mind work differently. This tea-spoon is the first result. It is made of Faux Bone (aged/scarred), PMC, brass, resin. My grandmother, Angela, collected little silver coffee-spoons which were given to her at special occasions, engraved with her name and date and which I inherited. So a little spoon seemed a natural for a first totally non-jewelry piece. I called it "Born With an Urban-Ethic Spoon in Her Mouth" as my take on the expression "... silver spoon in her mouth". This spoon resembles me more since it's both urban and ethnic, and not too fancy. It is part of my Urban-Ethnic" Series, which also includes jewelry. feel free to let me know you think !

Bijoux d'Exposition
Une bague d'exposition, comme un commentaire silencieux, une vision de ce qui peut devenir le monde ...
L'anneau, une vrai tirette de canette recyclée, le monde ... creux ... et ses continents en relief en pâte de métaux précieux, l'herbe en ... plastique, la fleur ... mutante, en pâte polymère skinner blend ... le tout, ce qui nous attends ? Peut-être pas ... si nous prenons nos responsabilités ... c'est peut-être seulement une vision rigolote d'un avenir plutôt plein d'espoir ...
