J'ai enfin fini la bague qui me hântait depuis des semaines. Ellle a représentée un défis sur plusieurs aspects. Je suis heureuse qu'elle est enfin sortie de ma tête, qu'il a été un success, et qu'il est maintenant sur mon doigt pour des tests réussits jusqu'à présent. Les températures de cuisson pour le cuivre sont les mêmes que ceux utilisés pour les boucles d'oreilles dans mon post précédent ici - ça fonctionne chaque fois pour moi et je suis contente que cette question soit réglée.
A la fin de la dernière minute de la toute dernière dernière cuisson, mon four de 5 ans est monté à 926°C et je l'ai éteinte. Le lendemain ... pas de four. Alors j'ai appellé mes deux medecins de fours préférés, Tonya Davidson and Arnold Howard qui m'ont tout les deux suggérés qu'il s'agissait probablement d'un problème de thermocouple. YAY ! Suivant leurs recommandations, avec un tourne-visse et un thermmocouple (de chez Tonya) en main il est revenue à la vie et comme neuf ;o) Moralité de l'histoire: ayez toujours un thermocouple de rechange sous la main.

Copper clay and silver clay - new ring
I finally finished this ring which has been haunting my mind for weeks and weeks. It was a challenge in many aspects. I'm so happy that it's out of my head, that it was successful, and now on my finger for successful happily testing up to now. The firing schedule for the copper is the same as for my previous post on the earrings here - it has worked every time for me and I'm happy that's settled. At the end of the very last minute of it's last firing my 5 year old kiln went up to 926°C and turned it off. Next day ... no kiln. So I called my 2 favorite 2 kiln doctors, Tonya Davidson and Arnold Howard who both suggested it was a thermocouple problem ... YAY ! Followed the doctor's orders (and Arnold's great video) with a screw-driver and thermocouple (from Tonya) at hand and it's back to new ! Moral of the story: always have a spare thermocouple at hand ...

Il y a des moments heureux où la vie nous apporte le soleil et le bonheur avec le sourire des amis qui viennent de loin nous rappeller a quel point c'est important de pouvoir rire ensemble, parler des choses de la vie et juste profiter du moment. La semaine denière j'ai eu ce cadeau ! Pendant une semaine chargé et des cours avec des élèves talentueuses, j'ai eu la visite de Linda Kaye-Moses et son époux photographe Evan Soldinger. Quiconque les connait sait à quel point ils sont généreux, adorables et vrai!

Last week I was given this great gift ! En vacances en France, ils ont fait plusieurs heures de route jusqu'en Bretagne mardi dernier pour que nous puissions passer un peu de temps ensemble. J'avoue que je ne voulais pas qu'ils partent, essayant même de les kidnapper sans succès, quel dommage !! Diner au bord de la mer, puis petit-dejeuner sur le port, visite de la côte et ensuite une bonne balade à Pont-Aven, suivant les tracves de Gauguin !
On their Vacation to France they kindly drove a number of hours all the way to Bretagne last Tuesday so we could enjoy some time together. I admit I didn't want them to leave and even tried kidnapping them, but it didn't work, bummer ! Dinner by the ocean, breakfast on the port then a drive to show them the coast and off to lunch and an afternoon visit of Pont-Aven, following Gauguin's footsteps !

Et, la cerise sur cet imense gateaux c'est d'avoir reçu son excellent livre dedicacé, en personne et en avant première! Il est maintenant disponible chez Whole Lotta Whimsy sous "books" ou ici. Le soir même, après notre diîner, allant me coucher livre en main je l'ai lu, regardé, re-regardé. Les projets sont originaux avec sa touche si unique, des techniques et des astuces très intéressantes et une galerie de photos d'artistes dont j'ai le plaisir de dire que j'en fait partie.

And the cherry on this delicious cake was having received her absolutely excellent and dedicated book before its official release! It is available through Whole Lotta Whimsy under "books" or here. After dinner that same evening while going to bed book in hand, I couldn't put it down, and turned the pages over and over. The projects are original, and have her wonderful touch, the techniques and special construction tips are very interesting and the photo gallery, of which I feel super lucky to be a part, is really filled with wonderful work by talented artists in the field.

Quand la Pâte d'Argent Devient un Jeux d'Enfant!
Ma fille de maintenant 9 ans m'a toujours regardé avec ses grands yeux et une grand désire de "faire comme maman". Elle est très créative et, comme tout enfant, adore réaliser des choses avec ses mains. Mes enfants connaissent la pâte d'argent par mon travail, et ont de l'expérience avec la pâte polymère par les diverses activités que je leur propose depuis plusieurs années. J'ai longtemps cherché pour trouver un projet qu'elle ait le plaisir de réaliser entièrement à partir de son imagination, tout en apprenant quelques petites choses d'importantes dans le chemin. Je voulais qu'elle apprenne les diverses étapes d'une création.

When Metal Clay becomes Child's Play!
My
little 9 year-old has always looked at my work with her big eyes and
an enormous desire to "do like mommy". She's very creative
and, like all kids, loves to make things with her hands. My kids know metalclay
through my work and have experience with polymer clay from the many
activities that I've suggested to them all these past years. I searched a
long time to find a project which she'd be able to make entirely from
her imagination, actively taking part in it ,while learning some important things in the process. I wanted her to learn the various stages of a design. Getting her imagination to work is really easy!
Alors, septembre dernier, quand elle avait 8 ans, j'ai enfin trouvé un projet à sa taille. Elle a fait un dessin, puis je lui ait demandé de réaliser d'abord une maquette en pâte polymère pour qu'elle ait la notion du volume et de la taille. La pâte polymère est idéal pour une maquette puisqu'elle ne
sèche pas pendant les étapes. Cela fait une chose en moins à gérer
quand on a 8 ans ! Je lui ai ensuite un peu aidée pour faire le moule, pour qu'elle apprenne à bien saisir les détails avec le silicone. Elle a fait son pendentif en pâte d'argent, séchée, puis je lui ai un peu aidée à poncer légèrement pour qu'elle voit comment éviter les aspérités et les pointes. Après cuisson j'ai juste soudé l'anneau à l'arrière (non, je ne lui ai pas laissé faire !), et elle l'a poli.

So,
last September, when she was 8, I finally found a project just about
"her size". She first made a drawing, then I asked her to make a model
using polymer clay in order to have a feel of size and volume. Polymer is great here because it doesn't dry out in the process so it's one less thing to deal with when you're 8 ! I then
helped her a bit to make the mold, and learn how to grasp details. She
then made her pendant in metal clay, dried, and I helped sand a bit so
she could learn how to avoid rough parts and points. After firing I
just soldered the back ring for the bail (no, I didn't let her do that!), and she polished it.
C'est vrai qu'il pourait avoir une petite pierre ou perle au niveau de sa queu pour l'équilibre visuel de l'objet, mais j'avoue que je suis très fière du résultat et, le principal c'est qu'elle aussi est très fière de son acomplissement ! Regardez par vous même. Pour moi c'est un beau petit phoenix, très symbolique, avec juste une petite touch primitive comme je les aime !

It could use a little pearl or stone to balance it out where the tail is, but I have to admit that I'm really proud of what she made ! And, the main thing is that she's very proud of herself and of her achievement ! Look for yourself. To me this is a beautiful and wonderfully symbolic little phoenix, just a touch primitive ! :o)

Pâte de Cuivre ! Copper clay ! Test ...

Qu'est ce que ces deux images ont en commun, vous me demandez ? Et bien, il s'agit d'un simple "avant et après"! La matière première, à gauche et le resultat d'une bague après mise en forme, à droite.
Depuis quelques semaines je fais des testes avec cette nouvelle matière. Voici une photo de quelques tests: la bague ci-dessus en pâte de cuivre et incrustations de pâte d'argent, et les pièces ci-dessous.
So what do these two photos have in common, you ask ? Well, it's just a simple "before and after" snapshot ! There's the raw material on the left photo, and the finished ring after working the materials, to the right.
These past couple of weeks I've been doing some testing with this new material. here's are photos of some of these tests - the copper clay ring with silver clay inlay above, and the pieces below:
Dans mon post précedent je vous demandais de deviner ce qu'il y avait dans l'image. Comme je ne suis pas du genre patient, et que sur Flickr on me disait que l'attente était trop longue, alors ... Il s'agit de la pâte de cuivre sous forme de poudre que j'ai acheté chez l'artiste Hadar Jacobson, qui commercialise depuis peu sa propre formule de pâte de cuivre et de pâte de bronze en poudre, et qui tient un blog très instructif sur la matière. Dans les deux cas, la poudre vient déjà avec le liant et il faut juste rajouter de l'eau démineralisé pour qu'elle devienne comme sa cousine fortunée juste à coté sur la première photo, la pâte d'argent ! ici, la bague a été réalisée en pâte de cuivre puis j'ai rajouté des incrustations de pâte d'argent.
In my previous post I asked you, dear readers, to guess what was in the image. Well, since I'm really not the patient type, and that on Flickr I was told that the wait was too long ... I decided to give in. It is simply a close up picture of copper clay powder that I bought from artist Hadar Jacobson who sells both copper clay and bronze clay in powder form and has a wonderfully informative blog on the subject. In both cases, the powder comes already with the binder and all that is needed is to add distilled water to have it become like its wealthy cousin in the photo above, silver metal clay. Here, the ring was made with copper clay then inlaid with silver clay.

de pouvoir l'avoir sous forme de pâte m'attirait énormement. Et le fait de pouvoir les marier ensemble devenait un feu d'artifice ! Bientôt on
poura aussi trouver une autre forme de pâte de cuivre sous le nom COPPRclay(tm), déjà prête à l'emploi chez Rio
Grande , comme c'est déjà le cas pour la pâte de BRONZclay(tm) prête à l'emploi.
I love copper and already often use it in my work. The association of both gives this warm feeling I really enjoy. The fact that copper would be found in clay form attracted me enormously. And that these two clays can be combined is 4th of July ! Not having to wait was a big plus for me, since I'd already waited enough ... remember, I'm not the patient type ;o). Rio
Grande will also soon be distributing another formula - COPPRclay (tm) in a ready to use form, as is already the case for their BRONZclay(tm).

Le "Verre en Pâte" et la Pâte d'Argent - TESTS - Glass Clay with Metal Clay

A la conférence Internationale PMC l'été dernier, une des présentations m'a particulièrement attirée l'attention. C'était celle de Martha and Ed Biggar sur la "pâte de verre" ou plutôt du "verre en pâte". Ensuite j'ai repris contact et visité le site de Martha and Ed, puis celui de Barry Kaiser m'ont tout les deux beaucoup aidés. Puis, j'ai dû adapter cette technique au moyens de bord que j'ai trouvé en France.
Non, ce n'est pas la pâte-de-verre traditionnelle que nous connaissons. Là il s'agit plutôt de préparer le verre en pâte, un peu comme la pâte d'argent mais avec moins "d'élasticité". La technique de préparation n'étant pas tout à fait la même, il ne faut pas non plus s'attendre à un résultat semblable à la pâte de verre et les techniques ancestrales qui l'entourent, ça serait trompeur. Mais, ele a sa valeur propre et les possibilités sont, néanmoins, assez intéressantes au point où je continue mes recherches et mes expérimentations.
En photo vous verrez, après des nombreux tests bien moins heureux, un des premiers résultats "réussi" de mes recherches de l'association du verre et la pâte d'argent. Ce n'est pas sensé être une oeuvre d'art, mais la poudre de verre a été modelée, les deux matériaux ont totalement fusionnés, et le résultat final est un objet solide et en volume. Il n'y a eu qu'une cuisson. Les deux produits se rétractent, mais le verre en pâte a eu une rétractation plus importante, il me semble, proche des 30 à 40 %. La poudre de verre utilisée est du noir opaque, donc pas spécialement la couleur la plus réussie, et de très près il reste encore quelques minuscules bulles d'air, ou plutôt des micro-particules d'un autre ton de gris, car la surface est rélativement lisse et brillante. Alors la recherche continue mais c'est prometteur !

One of the seminars at last year's 4th International PMC Conference which particularly called my attention was the one offered by Martha and Ed Biggar on glass clay. I contacted Martha, visited Martha and Ed's website and then also found Barry Kaiser's very helpful website on the subject.
I adapted the technique a bit to what was available to me here in France and have been experimenting these past few months. This is not quite like the traditional "pâte de verre" technique we all know. Here we are mixing powdered glass with binders to create a clay-like paste a bit like metal clay, but a bit less "elastic". Since the preparation of the clay is not quite like the ancestral pâte-de-verre technique, it wouldn't be wise to expect the exact same result. However, it has its own value and I find the possibilities in association with metal clay to be very exciting to the point that I'm still exploring.
You can see in the photo above one of my first "successful" pieces of this association after a number of flops. It's not meant to be a work of art ;o) but the glass powder was successfully modeled and formed, keeping it shape, both materials totally fused, and the final piece has volume and is solid with only one firing. Both materials shrank, but I believe that the glass clay here shrank between 30 and 40%. The glass powder I used was opaque black and not a very happy choice in my opinion, and up close there are little tiny bubbles, or rather specks of a different shade of gray, since the surface is rather smooth and shiny. So research continues but there's great potential !

Et ils vécurent heureux ... And they lived happily ever after ...
Aujourd'hui c'est le grand jour pour un couple qui m'a fait l'honneur de participer à leur hereux évennement en me commandant leurs alliances. L'inscription à l'intérieur de l'alliance du marié est "ti amo" puis la phrase continue, "cui me ames" à l'intérieur de celle de la mariée. Ce qui me semble particulièrement intéressant c'est que l'alliance de la mariée rentre *pile* à l'intérieur de la bague ce celle du marié. Même leurs doigt sont fait l'un pour l'autre ! ;o) Elle est céramiste, lui musicien. Tout me veux !!!!

Today is the big day for a wonderful couple who gave me the honor of taking part in this special event by ordering their wedding rings from me. In the groom's ring the inscription" ti amo", and in the bride's ring "cui me ames" to complete the phrase. What I find particularly interesting is that the bride's ring size fits perfectly inside the groom's ring. Even their fingers were made for one another ! ;o) She is a céramist and he's a musician. All my best wishes go to them !!!
